Growing ornamental grape over a pergola is a great way to form an inexpensive cover, and add shade. When it has all of its leaves, it provides shade in summer, come winter when the leaves drop it allows the winter sun in to warm the house. Other climbers to try out are wisteria and bougainvillea.
